Not to mention that a MM can only handle 4s. That limits motor choices somewhat since you can't run low kv motors at high V. Sure, you can gear up, but the added load on the ESC causes excessive heat and current draw.

No, I don't think a MM and 8/9XL will cut it to be considered "overkill". More like a Neu 1521 or 1527 on 8s using an MGM ESC would be overkill to me.
