Perhaps you have the spur and pinion mesh too tight. I find when I really crank the spur into the pinion and lock it down the noise level increases significantly. Backing it off a mm usually lessens the noise...and probably makes for better gear life.
Are you seeing incorrect wear on any of your gears (spur, pinion, idler, etc.)?
