Well, if I suspected a possible bad esc, I'd put a temporary 10-15A fuse inline with the battery power. This is plenty to program the ESC and beep the motor, but will pop if the ESC is bad and is dumping power to a motor coil (which would pull LOTS of current). If everything programs fine, pull the fuse out and try it in the vehicle watching temps on everything. If there is any hint of improper operation, remove battery power fast.
