I had the same problem when I built my e-revo also. I was using like the gold and tan springs (I think) which was ok.
I found that the revo springs all seemed to be like 1/4 - 5/16 short and required screwing the preload down 25% - 50% just to remove any play. I don't know if this normal or not but I found it annoying so I ended up using some firm and X firm springs from a set of powerstrokes. The springs are just long enough to fit snug with no preload required and are working good for bashing.
You may find that you'll want to run a little heavier rear then whatever the recommended setup is since you weight is carried a bit more on that end.
