A 7XL in a 14lb++ truck is the first problem and it's the best way to fried alot of controller.
Start by change your 7XL by a 10 or 11 XL, and buy good li-po, i know you tell that you don't have money for li-po, but wait and save some $$$, it's worth all the money you'll spend for it
And yes MGM is very good controller. But it's like any other electronics component, that's not bulletproof.
Lastly, somes MGM have experimenting somes bugs but lots of guys have good result with there MGM and this controller run very cool and smooth.
