I used a spacer for a while, but it was a hassle to line up the spacer, motor and mounting holes. I glued the spacer to the motor to hold it but the glue never held for long. If you can get Mike to add a few milimeters to his mounts or the heatsink that would be prefect. Another idea I had was making a spacer, and using the unused holes on the motor you could bolt it to the motor. If you countersink the holes and use short screws you should be able to use the extra holes on the motor can to secure the spacer to the motor, basically making it one piece. I will dig out my old spacer and try it out.
