For a race buggy I think 4S is definitely the way to go for a 1/8 buggy. I am running a 1512 2.5D in my XB8EC with a 17/48 gearing. I'm running a 4S 5000mAh MaxAmps pack with a MM and my top recorded speed (via Nomadio React speed sensor) is 42 mph.
I tried a 3000 KV range motor on 4S in the buggy before the Neu came in and it was thermal central. I thnk over 3000 kv is just too much for a 7-8lb buggy. Even on 3S you'll just be drawing too many Amps. I run a LMT 1930/6 (~3400 kv) in my CRT.5 (~4-4.5lbs) on 3S and it is an absolute perfect setup.
I have the XB8EC punch control on the MM turned up and the 2.5D will still pick up the front wheels sometmes. When the MMM comes out I plan to try out a 5S pack with 15 or 16 gearing - should be totally insane.
