lol, sounds about right! I started getting an AAS degree in electronics (technically electromechanical technology) and started working as a bench tech repairing mobos, driver circuits, etc to component level, and loved it. But as time progressed, the trend went to replacing the whole unit rather than fixing individual components (generally cheaper). I've always loved electronics and enjoy ripping them apart to see how they tick. I also used to work part-time at a local car-stereo shop repairing amps (easy once you know how they work because once you get by all the fluff, they are all the same with just different parts and different build quality), alarms, remote starts, etc. But that went away too. Eventually, I became a hobby-programmer. A "script-kiddie" really; mostly client/server javascript, ASP, SQL, etc. Now I get to do that for a living and making pretty good cash doing it! Like you, I'm always broke - I need two jobs; one for living, one for toys!
