And that shield you see inside is actually metal and spins with the shaft - for what it's worth.

You should be fine. It's better to restrict the air just a little then to have a pebble ruin the motor. I really don't think much air will be restricted and if that was the case most of the Nitro or our one IC engines wouldn't run at all.
