You also have to set your pc to do dual monitor output.
Right click your desktop background, get to display options/settings (in Vista, you first click on "personalize", then display settings), and you can set up the dual display stuff there, including native resolution changes. If that doesnt work, I'm fairly certain you may have gotten the wrong cable.

For some reason, I tend to think that the HDMI in wont support your analog display signal from the pc (HDMI relies on a "handshake" between the device sending the signal, and the device recieving it. One of the downfalls of the HDMI system). You should get a DVI-DVI cable (it will look just like the cable that goes to your monitor - your TV should have the same type of input. http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/10v1-05301.htm
