Public transport in cities seems to be fairly good- lots of buses, trains, trams even. Its when you leave these modern cities, and head out into smaller towns (like where I live, god help me), that you suddenly discover how esential a car is if you want to go anywhere or travel to work over any kind of distance. Public transport is terribly unreliable and expensive, plus it tends to have the general public onboard *please dont let the nutter sit next to me*. $10 a gallon for petrol, and high insurance + road tax +MoT etc make owning a car something of a luxury Im sad to say. Thankfully I have a backup plan; legs....
