3905 HV-Maxx Gearing - 06.14.2008, 02:47 PM

After searching this forum, and the brushless one, I think maybe somebody should make a sticky on gearing upgrades.
My nephew has a 3905 E-Maxx. After waiting for 3 months for his HV-4.5 with the 5mm shaft, he finally got it installed. He didnt know enough about RC's to realize that his stock pinion wouldn't fit when he ordered it, so then he had to wait for another week (ordered new 5mm pinion from Novak). Now he calls me this morning saying that the new pinion doesn't mesh with his stock spur. "WTF?!??!" (his words, not mine!)
My initial thought was that he may have ordered the wrong gears, but after checking, he did not. I searched these threads and it appears that the new 3905 has a .8Mod or 32P gearing? The 5mm gears that most everyone (and apparently Novak) sells are Mod1, correct? I did see that Robison Racing carries .8 Mod gears, in 5mm.
So in the interest of helping him out today, I'd like to know what his options may be.
Are there any "factory" Mod1 spurs, that would match Novak's gearing recommendation, and fit his Emaxx?
Are there any Nitro 5mm .8Mod pinions that we could make work?
Novak Recommends 12-14/70-72 gear ratio. With the largest MOD1 spur that I know of being 54t, that means he'd need about a 9 tooth pinion. But of course thats not made.....
As "hand-in-hand" as Novak and Traxxas are, I am really suprised that Novak had no information for him when he ordered the parts as to what would work and wouldn't. I check'd out their site, and if I hadn't known better, there would have been no indication to me that he was ordering something that wouldnt fit.

Thanks in advance.
