On my 8ight, I'd say there is about 1/2 to 3/4 of a millimeter clearance between the tray and motor mount. But the motor mount goes about 2 to 3 mm past the spur gear. So I think thats a fairly safe distance.
Yah, looking back at the picture, it definitely makes it look more than 3mm.
