Sorry for your loss. It's never a pleasant experience.
My mother passed close to 3 years ago, and like Drift_buggy, it was almost a blessing. She was never healthy as far back as I remember; acute asthma, heart problems (had a pacemaker), two strokes, and a number of bouts of pnemonia. I was at the hospital the night she died and it was horrible. All of her organs were shutting down in succession. The feeling of helplessness was overwhelming. The hospital gave her Morphine to ease her passing, but I remember watching as she was basically drowning as her lungs were filling with fluid. The nurse said she couldn't feel anything with the drugs in her, but I was so upset I wanted to slug the nurse because I could see that my mom did not look comfortable - drugs or not. Even writing this now is leaving a lump in my throat reliving those moments.
