Blown MM, MMM upgrade? -
09.25.2008, 11:39 AM
Hi, I have been running a MM in my lightning 2 pro 1/8th buggy for a long time now and although it runs very hot even with a fan It has been very reliable for approx 250 runs until now.
I was running on road in front of my dad's house, and towards the end of the run the (ESC) brakes failed and I crashed headlong into a kerb at near full speed, trying to drive away did nothing, not sure if the ESC died leading to the brake failure and crash or if it just thermalled (for the first time, but by how hot it ran I couldn't have been that far off) causing the brake failure and the impact of the crash broke it whichever way round it was it doesn't work any more.
It's over a year old and I ran it on 12 cells originally then 4s, so I know it is not under guarantee, here is the rub, getting castle products locally is not easy and RCM is out of stock of MM, but even if it was in stock its $135 and he has the MMM at only $145, Even before my MM went south I was tempted to get an MMM when the wait (first for the MMM then for a reliable version) was over to bring the temps down, but now the time has come and I've seen that lots of folk have been having problems with the internal BEC even with V2, I have a UBEC that I used with the MM and don't really have a problem with doing Brian G's mod and continuing to use it with an MMM, IF the MMM is otherwise all we were expecting it to be.
I'm sure there are plenty of people that have upgraded from the MM to the MMM, if anyone had an MM that was fan cooled and still running hot like mine and you swapped it for a MMM with no other changes did the MMM run cool? or was it still hot? or with that case all around it and fan on the top is it too hard to get a reading of the heatsink so you only know what the case/fan temp is?
I will be using it on 4s for now but plan on another vehicle at some point that will want more voltage, Is it really good for 6s or is it like some previous "6s rated" controllers from other company's that gets very hot when actually used at 6s.
