CRT's tend to smoothen edges a little because of the way they work. LCDs use actual tiny squares of light to build an image. So, it makes sense that if your resolution isn't set right, text looks imperfect. Look at it this way, if your res is set to 1280 pix across but the LCD has 1600 pixels across, a 1 pixel line will actually take up 1.25 pixels. (1600/1280=1.25), but it has to be either on or off, so it would probably be 1 pixel (depending on if it rounds down/up correctly). On a straight vertical line, this is sorta ok, but curves start to look bad. I hope that made sense.
