In a brushed motor, airflow is more important because the heat-producing component is on the rotor. In a BL motor, the coils (heat-producing component) is the can itself. So, just use a heatsink on the case if heat is a concern. Yeah, the magnet/shaft can get warm too, but you just have to rely on convection to get rid of that heat (and the little air cooling you get on the shaft outside the motor).
I guess it's a tossup of better cooling, or potentially having pebbles in the motor tearing up the coils...
