Gearing doesn't much effect the torque, use lower voltage if plan to have mercy on your tranny.
I presume that's an XL Feigao you have there, what is it's kv rate?
If you have a second tranny, then why not locking it - then you have reverse plus motor brake, depends from your ESC ofcourse.
