I let the mud dry then use a brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner and a brushes to remove the rough.

I use a set of Finish Line cleaning brushes for mountain bikes which are invaluble for getting into nooks and cranies.I use then for scrubbing transmission parts in the sink too.Tooth brushes are good for that too.
