Well, the plate lets you install all four screws into the motor. Then you screw the plate to the mount. So, if you strip threads, it's on a much cheaper part.

Take the motor out. By hand, gently and slowly thread a screw as far as it can go until it hits the coils. Back out a turn or two. Mark the screw where the threads meet the motor. Remove the screw and measure. This is how far the screw can be inserted. Best to do this on all four holes just in case on set of coils is a little bigger than the others and use the smallest value.
