I know works with one, because i use it in my CRT.
Also, when setting it up the first time, make sure the motor is on the mount and there is NO pinion. First time i plugged it in it was ready to drive, plugged in the batt in my house and WHOOSH... long story short, im very cautious plugging in my battery now
