Yes, obviously getting it fixed is preferable. But if it's gonna take forever for shippin both ways and repair and/or cost an arm and a leg (for shipping and repair), then I'd just do what I could to get it working.

BTW: Warranty repair (if even possible) might cost more if they see that the user tried to fix it already.
