I don't think you'll "damage" anything, but the receiver may "reboot" when/if the voltage drops much below 4.8v when under heavy servo load.

Like George said If using alkaline cells, 4 is good because they are at 1.5v each (6v). If using NiMHs, 5 rechargeable cells would be better because you'll get around the same 6v.
