Might as well get an ESC for the motor he's got, then when it dies upgrade the motor. I bought my Neu 1506 off eBay for $100, then a week later I found a 1509 with a water-cooling jacket (which you could probably sell for $10-$20) for the same price, and Neu motors are awesome.
