The issue with using short towers with normal length shocks is quite serious though- if you used some fuel tube on the inside of the shocks to act as limiters is would only leave you with about 5mm of shock travel before they did indeed bottom out and explode or bend like twigs. If you look at the pics of my truck, the shocks are laid down at 45 degrees or lower even, meaning you'd need shocks about 25% shorter than normal if you were to mount then onto normal arms whislt using GM towers.

I think the best compromise would be DUH or Nova towers, and some 1/8 scale shocks that are shorter than normal maxx shocks- buggy or truggy rears are what I use, but I recommend doing some careful measuring to see what length you need with the suspension arms level to represent slammed suspension- or something like that.
I'm not fimiliar with that method of limiting. Sort of went over my head aswell. I was talking about putting zipties (i use colored ones matched to my color scheme so it doesn't look wack) through the shock towers and around the top a-arm. Fairly common practice. Does that still sound like it would murder the shocks.
