Considering it is a 4s setup, and boats can pull more amps at full throttle than our cars pull as spikes during hard acceleration I do not think it is overkill at all.. That is constant high amp draw... If he was running a lower kv motor and 6s lipo and a less aggressive prop he could have gone with a 120 amp model...
