It is set at 15 degrees from the factory. The timing works similarly to a brushed motor timing. Advanced yields more rpms and higher amp draw (so lower runtime). Less advance should yield a slightly longer runtime and slightly lower rpms. I haven't tried it myself, though. The timing can only be changed via the programming link to the computer.
