14g is the smallest I would run, but in the past I have done so myself without any issues. Good solder joints are more important as they can create a bottle neck for the current, and you will notice any plugs or connectors at those points becoming hot. Lead free solder & a hot iron, and keep the wires as short as possible and you'll be fine
