I have a feeling that the matter you are referring to is mainly abstract, and while it cannot be created, neither destroy it is allowed to change phase. So what may have seemed to be solid could just as easily "vanish" into thin air. It has not so much disappeared, but rather in a form that is not perceptible by the naked eye. As far as this applying to everyone, keep in mind that you may have a higher IQ, thus you have a potential to understand and experience things lesser people may not be able to fully comprehend.
