I would start with checking the motor mount and making sure it isn't bent. Even a slight bend in the mount will cause short life of pinions. I've managed to bend 2 motor mounts from Mike. My terrible driving skills didn't help, but they were not hard to get flat again.
If you're eating up pinions then something isn't right between the gears. I usually run 15 or 16T on my truggy and a 17T on my buggy, both have metal spur gears. Only time I've damage a pinion was with a bent motor mount or my gear mesh was off.
