You got it, the spur is wider so there is more material in contact between the pinion and spur. This spreads out the contact patch and lowers the wear and gives you a much stronger setup. I have actually had an instance where the motor came loose and moved away from the spur, normally this would cause some damage to the spur/pinion as the gear mesh was lost and would grind off some material, but with the wide spur there was no damage to either the spur or pinion.
