When you open the motor, look all the way down inside the hole the rotor comes out of.
You will see a circuit board with several components on it. There should be three little black squares, 120 degrees apart.
I have a motor here that lost one, and it behaved like you described.
I've been thinking about sending it in for a Non-Warranty Replacement. There's no fixing it.
When you put the rotor back in, be VERY careful not to hit those hall sensors with the end of the rotor shaft. They can be damaged if not careful.
