Those shims are FOR the gears on the inside of the diff. The 4 small gears (spider gears) ride on shafts inside of the diff. Those shims can be put on the outside of the small gears on the shafts to force the gears to mesh tighter with the larger output gears. Less shims = looser, more shims = tighter. If it's too loose or too tight they will wear prematurely just like incorrect gear mesh for your spur/pinion.
I've also been running at 8 for probably 40 runs. never had an internal gear problem.
