To be honest, I thought those dogs were poorly trained, though definitely strong and brave.

Most of the police dog videos I've seen the dog releases immediately when the officer gives the command. The officer does not need to be distracted with or take the time to physically pull the dog off the suspect. He just says stop and the dog lets go and takes a few steps back and watches.

The dogs are intelligent though. I know of a case where an officer pulled over some guy, and as the officer reached the window of the vehicle, the suspect took off. Somehow the officer was caught on the car and was being dragged along. The dog jumped out of the police cruiser, caught up to the car as it was accelerating and jumped in the (open) passenger window and began attacking the suspect (who stopped the car immediately).

I know that the police station for my city, there are quite a few plaques honoring former police dogs.
