I use the little gold connectors to connect my motor to my 9918. Soldering is always better but I like to change out motors sometimes.

The 9918 you just connect all 3 wires in any order. When you test the motor if it spins the wrong way you can fix that with the programming jumper.

With some other controllers like my 18.61k you connect all 3 wires and if the motor spins backwards you switch any 2 of the 3 wires and that fixes it.
