Deans are fine for what we do, they can handle the current draw just fine- its only the extreme setups like very heavy/tall geared 1/8 trucks and bigger that call for something like bullet plugs.
As for soldering, just ditch the deans and go for something better like EC5 connectors or 5.5mm bullets; I sure as heck wouldnt pay an LHS or electrical store ~£10/hour to change over/ solder my battery connectors. Easy work around would be to solder on a short length of 12g wire to the end of the 8-10g wire ( butt joint ), allowing you to solder on the Deans much more easily.
