Yes there are many threads on just this subject, and the best suggestions are using drill bit shanks, or even allen key shafts. Both are made of hardened steel and work well. Keep in mind that once you insert this alternative and eleviate that weak point, the weak spot trikles down to something else in your drivetrain.
