That sounds cruel, but I am an animal lover(like as in, hates watching seals die on discovery haha). What would happen if you have a newborn that was crawling around the floor, and went to "pet puppy" as he was eating. Would the dog snap and bit the child in the face?

My family had a experience just like that......
When my Brother and Sister in law got married two things happened....she got pregnant

and they bought two basset hounds, one male one female.(had them both clipped too)
The female basset named Abby grew
very close to my sister in law in the months that she was pregnant, and when the baby popped out(though I don't quite remember her saying it was that easy...) Abby and the Spencer liked the baby and every thing was peachy......until, Abby realize she wasn't getting all the attention she started to become a real bitch. But since both our families are dog lovers, they didn't think any thing of it "dogs can be jealous she'll get over it" Need less to say, the problem didn't get any better.....Then one day the family was having lunch and as you guys know, baby's make a lot of mess, and with the clean up crew still in full swing My niece got down to go play.........A few barks a babies cry and short scuffle later Abby had my nieces head in her mouth....
All of it
Ever see a Dog fly? I have, right threw the kitchen and out the door. My niece was unharmed but the next day they got rid of the dog. They gave it to my in laws brother. And who says Dogs don't hold grudges? Years later He brought the dog with him on a visit, that didn't go over well nothing happened but that dog had a grudge. So she's never allowed to return again.
And as for the Spencer? well lets just say he's still the families favorite
