There are always ways to get your point across without "telling" someone what to do.

Suggesting and telling are two incredibly different things. In my opinion, suggesting includes asking the questions you mentioned. It can also include suggesting the right thing to do without telling them they have to do it.
Sometimes people are torn by emotion and might make a terrible decision if someone close doesn't suggest a better solution. If done properly, there is no reason for it to become a feud.
I think we're on the same page.
