I know the "cheap setup first, then upgrade later" sounds reasonable, but you are really better off buying higher quality stuff the first time around. If he buys good quality gear and doesn't like the hobby he can sell it, and the quality gear will hold it's resale value better than cheap stuff. If he likes the hobby then he can buy more vehicles but will already have a solid Tx/Rx setup, charger, batteries, etc.

As was already said, this hobby isn't cheap. To do it right, and get the most out of it with least headaches and problems you have to be willing to drop a bit of cash.

Knowing what I know now, if I had to start from scratch I'd get a nice clean used slash roller, Mamba Max or MMP (used from member here) Velineon motor, Spektrum radio setup (Losi 2.4 tx/rx, tx can be upgraded, rx all still spektrum compatible) and Zippy/Turnigy lipos with one of the better HobbyCity chargers (iCharger again).
