there is one last option that may have not been suggested, hope i'm not too late.
if you have a drill press (vertical drill, whatever) and a good one, not just a toy dremel one or a hand drill stuck in a holder one, a manly bench mounted one.
you can actually fabricate a pair of struts that sit across under the pinion and then using the drill press with an up-side-down drill in it, you can push the motor/shaft away from the pinion.
this is how i do it but i have access a lot of large machinery, a nice new lathe is comming soon, 2.5 tonns of awsomeness (spins up to 2ft diameter jobs
