Thats probably as the ESC plugs into the BEC. All the BEC does is terminate the ESC's red wire and pass through the signal and black.
You have an option of direct wiring the BEC to the servo (using a y splitter) and leaving the red wire in on the esc. I do this on my crawlers to stop the RX having 4+ amps going through it...
To do this I use a revo servo splitter... Plug servo and BEC into Y - and plug Y into steering on RX - Just remove the red line on the Y section into the RX and optionally the signal on the BEC branch of the Y. This has the benefit of leaving all cables intact which is very helpful for software updates etc...
