Yeah, that's a big problem with IR thermometers -- temp a shiny surface and the temps are off -- WAY off. We have that problem with some prototype motors we build -- we don't want to spend the time to have the case anodized, so they ship them with just bare machined aluminum surfaces. And then you can't get an accurate temperature with an IR gun anywhere on the case.
Always pick a black, non-shiny surface (if possible) to temp with an IR thermo -- then you will get a reasonable answer.
