If you output of the BEC shorted (red to brown wire), it should have activated the overcurrent protection and shut the BEC down. If the signal wire (orange) shorted against something else (like the red or brown), I don't know. That's used to program the BEC so I'm not sure what effect it has, if anything.

However, since it took out your fans, I wonder if it output full battery voltage instead? I would check the output with a volt meter if I were you, and really, if it did/does have full battery voltage, I would NOT use it again; next time it could be your receiver, servos, etc that get blown.
