Sheilded bearings. -

The bearings you described are probably stainless steel sheilded bearings, which are sealed and pre-lubricated. They cannot be lubricated once they are sealed. If the seal is broken and lubrication leaks out the bearing has to be removed and a new one put in it's place. These types of bearings usually last a good while unless they are misused, or abused, but are generally pretty tough products. I hope this info helps.
