What exactly do you mean by smooth out the stroke? I notice my Dad does more revs than me and my brother does less. Seems to fit on the scale of how we ride with each other ie- Dad rides more so is better at it.
Dad also got another retro bike. The gear lever is down on the frame and is in dire need of a service. It doesn't shift enough to make the full range of gears. I had a ride on it 2 weeks ago. It was often easier to keep it one gear

Very comfortable bike though. The main sproket was even out of round to supposedly help with the pedal stroke somehow
