joosten, you have to remember; power is the product of rpm and torque. More rpm = more power, and more torque = more power. The L series motors get their power from high rpm's and the XL motors get their power from torque. Both L and XL motors can be geared to give the same speed - but the main advantages of XL motors is they run cooler and have the potential for higher cell counts.
You said yourself, the 8L in your TXT needs a fan to keep it cool. If you ran an 8XL, you could gear up to get the same speed and you won't need a fan to keep temps down.
Basically, unless weight is a big issue, XL motors are always the better choice over L motors.
