Dad also got another retro bike. The gear lever is down on the frame and is in dire need of a service. It doesn't shift enough to make the full range of gears. I had a ride on it 2 weeks ago. It was often easier to keep it one gear Very comfortable bike though. The main sproket was even out of round to supposedly help with the pedal stroke somehow

Be at it again tomorrow morning
According to the expert's most people pedal in a square motion or choppy, instead of a circle which is the desired motion smooth. Most people only use force on the down stroke &do not pull on the up stroke. The chainring on your dads new bike sounds like a Shimano biopace chainring. Watch this video. this is considered a very smooth pedal stroke.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opIHaO_mt0M. This is Taylor phinney. This video is of one of the best Climbers in the world. His name is Marco Pantani ( the Pirate). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66iXTQio7wk. He raced the Tour de France & the Giro de italia in the 90's.
