I think I might try Shoe Goo or Amazing Goop (similar stuff from the same company). It should set up a bit firmer than putty, but you can still remove it later with a hobby knife or pick. Silicone sealant would probably do the job too, and be removable.

I have a plenty of stock diffs and diff parts laying around, and wouldn't mind using JB Weld on one to make it permanent, but I really don't want to do that to my Slipperential.
