Nope, it was a viewsonic VX922. I had tried googling this issue a while back but must not have been using the right terms, because I just tried Googling again and this flashing light thing seems to be fairly common, and the cause are the capacitors I already found. Seems that 99% of the time, simply replacing the caps fixes it as long as they haven't gotten so bad that they take out another part of the circuit.
